Rasmussen Factor, Inbreeding Patterns

Racehorse Breeding Theories noted two particular patterns of inbreeding that involved the Rasmussen Factor.  The so-called Formula One Pattern is constituted by duplicating the direct female line of the sire to the direct female line of the dam. Quiet American was the example given. Cequillo was the third dam of Quiet American’s sire, Fappiano. Cequillo was also the third dam of Quiet American himself. Quiet American was 4×3 to Cequillo.

The so-called Delta Pattern involves duplicating full brothers and sisters up the top line through the sire and down the bottom line through the dam. The example given was 1982 champion 2-year-old Roving Boy (NOT 1980 champion two-year-old, as the chapter erroneously states). Roving Boy was by Olden Times out of Black Eyed Lucy.

Olden Times was by Relic, by War Relic (by Man o’ War out of Friar’s Carse). Black Eyed Lucky was by Prince Royal II out of Lady o’ War, by Princequillo out of War Kilt (by Man o’ War out of Friar’s Carse). War Relic and War Kilt were full siblings. Roving Boy was inbred 3×3 to those full siblings (and both Man o’ War and Lady o’ War are misspelled in the book).

I had so much fun with these two patterns in my series a little over two years ago that I decided to do it all over again, only this time with sales foals of 2003-2007 instead of sales foals of 1999-2002. I did notice this time around that the so-called Delta Pattern specified that the names duplicated must be FULL siblings. The so-called Formula One Pattern does NOT specify that the names duplicated must be FULL sisters.

That did not and still does not make any sense to me. So I decided to look at three patterns. Henceforth I will call Formula One Pattern A and Delta Pattern B. Nags that fit Pattern B except that they involve HALF siblings instead of FULL siblings I call Pattern C.

Listed below are all nags among sales foals of 2003-2007 that fit these three patterns. I trust that the format is familiar to you by now. Discussion follows the lists.

I found 163 foals with Pattern A. They sold for a gross of $9,488,349, an avergae of $58,211 (compared to the overall average of $54,140), and a maverage of 184.10 (compared to the overall maverage of 163.11).

I found 43 foals with Pattern B. They sold for a gross of $1,842,150, an average of $42,841 (compared to the overall average of $54,140), and a maverage of 156.05 (compared to the overall maverage of 163.11).

I found 115 foals with Pattern C. They sold for a gross of $18,738,505, an average of $162,944 (compared to the overall average of $54,140), and a maverage of 217.75 (compared to the overall maverage of 163.11).

Pattern C was by far the most expensive. It included the following nags sold for $1,000,000 or more: Indigo Cat (stakes winner, $2,600,000 as a yearling in 2003), Egyptian Queen ($3,800,000 as a yearling in 2005), Desired ($2,200,000 as a yearling in 2006), Ibn Al Nafis ($1,900,000 as a yearling in 2007), and Top Class ($1,600,000 as a yearling in 2005).

Pattern A and Pattern B did not include any nags sold for $1,000,000 or more. Pattern B was below the overall average and maverage. Pattern A was above the overall average and maverage (considerably above the latter).

So in terms of racing results, Pattern C should have been best, followed by Pattern A and Pattern B. And that was exactly the case.

Pattern B had ZERO stakes winners from 43 foals. So much for the power of duplicating FULL siblings. Enough said.

Pattern A had six stakes winners from 163 foals (3.68%, above the overall figure of 3.36%). Those six stakes winners were not particularly good though. They averaged only 508 Performance Points each (compared to the overall average of 603). Taking both quantity and quality of stakes winners into account, that translated into a PPI (result) of 0.923 (overall average of 1.00). Not particularly good, especially since their average and maverage were ABOVE the overall figures.

Pattern C had seven stakes winners from 115 foals (6.09%, well above the overall figure of 3.36%). Those seven stakes winners were pathetically weak though (Performance Points of 668, 350, 331, 324, 249, 165, and 157). The overall average is 603. Hence taking both quantity and quality of stakes winners into account, that translated into a PPI (result) of 0.964 (overall average of 1.00). So yes, Pattern C was the best of the three patterns, but it was still below the overall average (1.00), which was not good at all considering its extremely high prices.

I found it particularly amusing that Pattern C had the best results despite being the one pattern of the three considered to be not significant (because it involved half siblings instead of full siblings; and the full siblings had ZERO stakes winners from 43 foals). But the best results of Pattern C were really not that good considering its extremely high prices.

“The question really is: ‘How many coins must one place in a slot machine before a jackpot finally appears?’ ” So concluded the chapter on this subject in Racehorse Breeding Theories. The answer to that question with regard to these three particular patterns of RF inbreeding is “a XXXX of a lot MORE than if you just injected coins randomly.”

Pedigree gurus have searched and searched for that one particular pattern of inbreeding that will yield the alchemy of “magical” results, that will transform base metals into gold, that will hit the jackpot in slot machines much more often than statistically expected. They have not found it yet. They never will.
